With a mission to provide the opportunity and environment for people who wish to learn more about the Korean language and culture, the Korean Language School at Andrew Kim Korean School was established.

Focusing on “interculturalism” — the paradigm that emphasizes strong communication and relationships between cultures — we aim to become a place of community-based communication, culture, and education. Our program focuses not only on the Korean language, but also on other facets of Korea: traditional culture, pop culture, Korean history, and current issues.

There has been a recent world-wide increase in interest in K-pop, Korean drama, movies, literature, and fashion. We want to offer an educational opportunity for those who wish to approach Korean culture and language through our program.

Also, there has been a recent increase in demand for bilingualism. Our philosophy is that students’ competency in bilingualism not only increases their personal skillset, but also allows them to become a vital bridge of respect, appreciation, and cooperation between two cultures — the United States and Korea.

한국학교 프로그램에 10여년을 몸담으며 항상 풀지못한 숙제처럼 마음 한켠의 짐이 있었습니다.

1.5세 2세의 아이들이 자라 성년이 되면, '어른이 된 이 아이들이 갈 수 있는 한국학교를 만들어줘야 될텐데..' 미국이라는 곳에서 성년이 된 우리의 아이들이 '문화적 정체성'을 가진 자존감 있는 성년으로 살아갈 수 있도록 lifelong learning center를 만들어 주는게 기성세대의 몫이라는 생각과 열망들이었습니다.

이러한 마음들을 모아 Korean Language School at Andrew Kim Korean School 프로그램이 시작되었으며, 이제는 한 걸음 더 나아가 한국어를 습득하고 한국문화를 배우고 싶은 사람들에게 열린 문화 공간으로 다가가고 있습니다.

'소통'과 '관계'의 패러다임이라 할 수 있는 interculturalism에 기초하여 지역사회와의 소통의 장 교육과 문화의 장이 되고자, 학생들로 하여금 한국어뿐아니라 한국전통 문화를 비롯하여 대중문화, 한국역사와 시사 이슈에 이르기까지 다양한 분야를 접할 수 있도록 교육하고 있습니다.

또한, 2000년 이후에 한국어에 대한 수요가 급증하고 있기때문에, 학생의 이중언어 구사 능력이 개인의 능력을 높이는 일뿐만 아니라 한국과 미국 두 문화간의 협동과 존중을 가능하게 하는 미국과 한국사회를 연결하는 인재를 양성하는 일이라는 생각으로 교육프로그램 향상에 최선을 다하고 있습니다.
